This option lets you configure the graphics adapter to power-up
in a state that best suits your system. You will be able to specify the
following:
■ Type of monitor to be connected to the adapter
■ Video mode at power-up
■ 16-Bit or 8-Bit ROM operations
■ Port address and interrupt vector IRQ for the mouse
■ 16-Bit or 8-Bit I/O bus operations
The adapter power-up sequence will read the above settings from
the non-volatile EEPROM and configure adapter output/operations
accordingly.
Once saved, settings will remain unchanged until altered.

With this option you can change the adapter to display a different video
mode without affecting the Power-up mode setting stored in EEPROM.
The video mode selected using this option will be lost when the system
is powered down or when a new mode is selected.
Press <Enter> to view the video modes supported by your adapter.

You can test the functionality of your graphics adapter using
this option.
The following diagnostics are performed to thoroughly test the VGA
or the 8514/A portion of your graphics adapter. You can also test
for mouse functions and display pertinent system files and statuses:
■ VGA Monochrome test
■ VGA Color test
■ Mouse test
■ 8514/A Diagnostics
■ System Information
Press <Enter> to access the diagnostics menu.

The Monochrome test option will test VGA monochrome attributes
and monochrome graphics modes.
The test also displays test patterns.
You will have a menu listing many different tests.
Select one that you wish to perform and type the
letter beside the test description.
Errors, if any, are reported at the end of each test.
Press <Enter> to start the tests.

The Color test mode option will test the VGA color attributes,
video memory, and color graphics modes.
You will have a menu of many different tests.
Select one that you wish to perform and type the
letter beside the test description.
Errors, if any, are reported at the end of each test.
Press <Enter> to start the tests.

The best values for the IRQ numbers depend upon
the type of computer into which the adapter is being
installed, and whether the mouse port is being
configured at the Primary or Secondary Address.
These are the recommended values:
PC AT/MC
Primary 5 2
Secondary 4 4
Some software may support other values. Not all
software will operate correctly if the default
values are not chosen.

This option is designed to optimize the performance of the graphics
adapter by selecting a suitable Bus I/O mode for your system.

Selecting this option will enable automatic mode selection.
The graphics adapter will check the CPU and set Bus I/O to:
■ 8 bits on 80286 processor systems, and
■ 16 bits on 80386 or higher processor systems.
This option may cause some computer systems to lock up. To correct
the problem, power down the system, reboot and re-configure
Bus I/O mode to 8 bits.

Your bus mouse will be tested if you select this option.
You will be able to check for proper mouse movement by moving
the mouse and watching the cursor on the screen.
Button operation can also be tested by depressing one or more buttons
and checking for appropriate response on the screen.
Press <Enter> to start the Mouse test.

This menu shows the user the current video mode which the
graphics card is presently in.
You may elect to alter this mode to one of other possible video
modes that your adapter can support.
Press <Enter> to change the current video mode.

This option selects the VGA mode and is functional only with
VGA, 8514/A and multisync monitors.
Software configured for VGA will run under this mode.
You have the choice of selecting the Color or Monochrome
mode of operation for VGA mode.
Press <Enter> to select color/mono mode.

This option selects the EGA mode and is functional on
all monitors.
Software configured for EGA will run under this mode.
You have the choice of selecting the Color or Monochrome
mode of operation for the EGA mode.
Press <Enter> to select the color/mono mode.

This option selects the CGA mode.
ATI Technologies Inc. enhances this mode by improving the
text to 8x14 character matrix and graphics are 75% double
scanned on all monitors.
Press <Enter> to select the CGA video mode.

Selection of this option will put your Graphics Adapter
into MDA Text mode.
If you are using a color monitor, you will have a choice
of three text colors:
White
Amber
Green
Press <Enter> to select the MDA 720x350 Text mode.

Selection of this option will put your Graphics Adapter
into Hercules 720x348 graphics mode.
If you are using a color monitor, you will have a choice
of three text colors:
White
Amber
Green
Press <Enter> to select the MDA 720x348 graphics mode.

Selection of this option will put your Graphics Adapter
into a special Hercules 640x400 graphics mode.
Only a limited number of programs use this resolution. Use this
mode only if you have a problem with the 720x348 graphics mode.
If you are using a color monitor, you will have a choice
of three text colors:
White
Amber
Green
Press <Enter> to select the MDA 640x400 graphics mode.

If your current video mode is either EGA or VGA, then selection
of this option will put your Graphics Adapter into a 80x43 line
Text mode or 80x50 mode, respectively.
By choosing this option you will at best double the number of text
lines displayed on your monitor.
Press <Enter> to select this mode.

This menu allows the user to specify a directory, from which
the installations will be made.
The INSTALL program expects all auxiliary files to be in
their proper directories as the Distribution diskettes.
If you are running INSTALL from a Utilities directory, such
as "C:\COMBUTIL," you will have to enter a path name to the
source directory, that contains files the INSTALL program
may require at any time.
For example, to install AutoCAD drivers from the Distribution
diskette in drive A, enter 'A:\ACAD' for the source directory.
NOTE: Entering 'A:\' will also be acceptable.

This option sets your Graphics Adapter for a 132x25 text mode.
132 columns and 25 rows of text can now be displayed.
This mode is functional with all monitors.
NOTE: 132 column mode can only be used by software which is
written to support 132 columns on the screen. Check your
software users manual or call your dealer to confirm that
the application will run in this mode.
Press <Enter> to select this mode.

Since you have a color monitor, you can now select the color
for the chosen monochrome mode; you have three options :
■ White
■ Green
■ Amber
Press <Enter> to select the required color.

This option will copy CRYSTAL(R) fonts to your disk to be used by
a driver that supports grayscale screen fonts.
Grayscale drivers are supplied for applications such as Windows.
CRYSTAL Fonts(R) are WYSIWYG high resolution near-300 dpi screen fonts
What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. These fonts are designed to match the
resolution of laser printer outputs, for displaying on the screen.

Supply a complete DOS path to the sub-directory where you
wish to install (copy) the adapter interface. Accept the name
suggested or enter your own drive:\directory name.
The installation program will then copy files to the indicated
destination.

ATI enhanced drivers enable applications to run in
high-resolution modes supported by ATI's graphics adapters.
Press <Enter> to view drivers that are currently available.

To select a different "Monitor Type" than as shown, press
<Enter> to bring up the list.
To discard any changes, press <Esc>
Tip: You can proceed to each entry in this menu, revise
the settings, then save all of them to EEPROM at the
same time.

This option is used to configure the mouse port for your computer
environment. You have the choice of selecting either the Primary
Address, Secondary Address or Disabled.
The factory default setting for the mouse port is Disabled. To
activate the mouse port, select the Primary Address option.
Secondary address is used only if there is an address conflict
at 23Ch - 23Fh (some serial cards may use this address).
If your system has cards at both port addresses 23Ch - 23Fh and
238h - 23Bh, the mouse port must then be disabled.
Upon selecting the mouse port address, you will be prompted to
define the IRQ (interrupt request) level to be used by the mouse.
Press <Enter> at the required port address selection.

Scroll up or down to highlight your monitor. Press <Enter>
to accept it.
If your monitor is not shown on this list, then select the
'Custom' option. This option will allow you to customize the
CRT parameters to your specific monitor.
By referring to the documentation supplied with your monitor
you should then have a good idea of the frequencies which your
monitor can support, and the interlacing scheme it uses; this
information will help you to better select one of the available
customization options.
The highlighted monitor selection will be written to EEPROM
only if you choose to save it.

to accept it.
If your monitor is not shown in this list, refer to the documentation
supplied with your monitor. Your monitor manufacturer should supply
technical specifications, pertaining to monitor's characteristics;
there are three specifications which are of most importance in
monitor selection:
- Interlaced (i.) or Non-Interlaced (n.i.)
- Vertical sync frequency (V.frq)
- Resolution (Res)
Based on these figures, select the monitor from the list which
is most compatible.
For example, if you didn't find the exact brand and make of your
monitor in the list, but you know that your monitor is rated at 60Hz
Vertical Frequency (V.frq), can display 1024x768 resolution, and is
Non-Interlaced (n.i.), then you would select the following option:
' Generic n.i. 60Hz 1024x768 '
The highlighted monitor selection will then be written to EEPROM
only if you choose to save it.

This option sets your Graphics Adapter for a 132x44 text mode.
132 columns and 44 rows of text can now be displayed.
This mode is functional with all monitors.
NOTE: 132 column mode can only be used by software which is
written to support 132 columns on the screen. Check your
software users manual or call your dealer to confirm that
the application will run in this mode.
Press <Enter> to select this mode.

Press <Enter> to start the diagnostics program which will
test the various components of the 8514/A portion of your adapter
to ensure proper operations. It will display test patterns and
pause to let you view the integrity of the displayed image.

■ Adapter memory size
■ Adapter ROM

■ Adapter FIFO
■ RAMDAC
■ Video RAM
■ Adapter subsystems
■ Test patterns of applicable video modes

This option enables the user to set up a power-up
configuration for the bus mouse.
You will need to select a non-conflicting port Address, as
well as the Interrupt Level in order to successfully
configure the mouse.
Press <Enter> to view the selection options of the port
Addresses for the mouse.

directory where you intend to store the Adapter Interface
files. It should have the following format:
drive:\directory
Type or edit the DOS path using the keys indicated at the

and directory where you initiated this installation.)

system ordinarily boots.
In many cases it is drive 'C', so press <Enter> to accept
it, otherwise enter the boot drive.
The installation program will then reference AUTOEXEC.BAT
file and modify CONFIG.SYS file in the root directory of

8 or 16 bit ROM operation can be selected for your Graphics
Adapter.
When the card is installed in an 8 bit slot, 8 bit operation will
automatically be selected; and when installed in a 16 bit slot,
the video RAM will always use a 16 bit RAM access, but the ROM
(which contains the video BIOS) may be accessed with an 8 or
16 bit datapath.
Press <Enter> to select either the 8 or 16 bit ROM datapath.

In order to achieve high performance from your Graphics Card,
select the 16 bit option for ROM operation.
The INSTALL program will perform a test for 16 bit operation
and display a message if 16 bit operation can not be attained.
If your system does not support 16 bit ROM access, this does
not indicate a problem with your Graphics Adapter or your
system - it simply means that the system manufacturer has
chosen not to implement the IBM standard for ROM address timing
in the interest of higher performance in other areas.
If this is the case, select the 8 bit option and press <Enter>.

This option enables the user to select the Power-up Video mode of
the Graphics Adapter - i.e. the mode that the adapter will be set
to after the computer is powered up or reset.
The video mode setup information will be saved in the on-board
EEPROM, thus retaining the user-selected power-up mode even after
the power is turned off.
Your Graphics Adapter can be set to wake up in one of the following
text modes :
■ VGA
■ EGA
■ CGA
■ MDA 720x350
■ MDA 640x400
Press <Enter> to select one of these modes.

Selection of this item will start your Graphics Adapter in VGA mode,
and is operational on all Color and Monochrome monitors.
You will be given the option of choosing either the COLOR or MONO
option; if you have a color monitor, and choose the MONO option,
another menu will appear, asking for the choice of foreground color.
As well, a dual adapter configuration may be selected, if needed.
NOTE: VGA Color mode is the Factory default for this card.
Press <Enter> to select the VGA start-up option.

Selection of this item will start your Graphics Adapter in EGA mode,
and is operational on all Color and Monochrome monitors.
You will be given the option of choosing either the COLOR or MONO
option; if you have a color monitor, and choose the MONO option,
another menu will appear, asking for the choice of foreground color.
As well, a dual adapter configuration may be selected, if needed.
Press <Enter> to select the EGA start-up option.

Selection of this item will start your Graphics Adapter in CGA mode.
Because this mode has the lowest resolution available on this card,
ATI Technologies Inc. recommends using this mode as a default only
if the majority of your software is CGA self-booting software.
Press <Enter> to select the CGA power-up mode.

Selection of this item will start your Graphics Adapter in Hercules
text mode.
ATI Technologies Inc. recommends using this mode as a default only
if the majority of your software is monochrome.
If you are using a color monitor, when you select this option, you
will be required to choose a color (either white, green or amber).
Almost all Hercules Graphics programs use this resolution.
Press <Enter> to proceed with this mode.

Selection of this item will start your Graphics Adapter in special
Hercules text mode.
However, only a small number of programs such as PrintMaster or
some Oriental word processing programs use this resolution.
Do not use this mode unless the 720x350 Hercules mode fails to run
your Hercules compatible programs.
Press <Enter> to select the 640x400 mode.

You now have the choice of choosing either the COLOR or MONO
option; if you have a Color monitor, you can :
1. select the COLOR option, and then choose one of
the available color resolutions, or
2. select the MONO option, and then choose one of 3
possible foreground colors.
If you possess a Monochrome monitor, you may select the MONO
option, resulting in a default color. Otherwise, you may
select the COLOR option, which will interpret the colors as
shades of gray.
Position the cursor at your selection and press <Enter>.

This final menu allows the user to select the resolution
of the VGA Color mode.
Two options are available:
■ CV80 - VGA Color high resolution 80 column text mode
■ C80 - VGA Color low resolution 80 column text mode

With your Graphics Adapter being the only video card in your
system, you can choose either the COLOR or MONO option; if you
have a Color monitor, you can :
1. select the COLOR option, and then choose one of
the available color resolutions, or
2. select the MONO option, and then choose one of 3

option, resulting in a default color. Otherwise, you may

You now need to decide which video card you wish to serve
as the Primary adapter.
Primary adapter is the start-up video adapter that becomes
active upon power-up or system reset.
Having selected your Primary adapter, you will be asked to
make a choice for your Secondary adapter in the menu that
follows.
Select the adapter you wish to be Primary and press <Enter>.

For the Secondary adapter you have the choice of selecting
either the Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA) or the Color
Graphics Adapter (CGA).
In the following menu you will be requested to choose the
power-up video mode for your Primary adapter.
NOTE: If you have selected MDA as your Secondary adapter,
then the Primary adapter can not be configured for
Monochrome operation. Similarly, with CGA selected
for the Secondary, the Primary can't be set to work
in Color mode.
Make your choice for the Secondary adapter, and press <Enter>.

Select the resolution(s) and\or mode which you wish to set up your
monitor for. It is recommended that you go through each one of the
available options and configure for the most stable and flicker-free
display.
Following your selection, you will be asked to choose from a list
of other monitor parameters that will define your monitor's
specifications.
The 132 Column Mode does not have a frequency selection menu; as a
result, upon its selection, you will be asked to carry out the
screen adjustment operation.

Select the frequency and interlacing scheme that matches your monitor
specifications as closely as possible.
Following this selection you will be prompted to make any adjustments
to the screen, as you see fit.
Screen size, position, frequency and polarity could all be altered
to arrive at the best looking display.
You may find that some frequencies will produce an unstable display;
If this happens, choose another frequency - preferrably of higher
value, in order to avoid the flicker.
If none of the options produce a stable display or you know that your
monitor does not support the shown resolution, then choose the 'Not
Supported' option.

VGA portion of the Graphics Adapter.
